STAPLES

How would you create a shopping experience that thrives across millions of products?

Simplify complex retail experiences using a well-defined, flexible design system

Staples works both with consumers and businesses. They offer products and services, each varied and complex. The office supplies giant was on the verge of a brand refresh and needed to build a library of system components they could deploy across many retail experiences. We led the team that shipped the next generation designs for these components.

The goal was to develop gold standards and create a highly usable system no matter the connection or device. We used popular design patterns and a clear visual language. We considered our varied product offerings across many customer segments, and architected a core of commonly traveled experiences to test against. We wanted everyday Staples customers to feel well taken care of.

Expand service offerings across digital platforms

We partnered with the executive team to deliver on the goal of the next generation digital retail platform. We looked for opportunities to expand Staples’ current offerings in the online business services space to match offerings found in store, like faxing. And now, business related customers gain access to services that were only in store, that are now available online through staples.com.

Systems thinking

In the end, we gave Stapes the affordance of systemic thinking with rich brand application. This work lives on today in elements and visual language across Staples.com, in the Staples app, and in retail applications across the US.
